When 40-year-old Liliana received her breast cancer diagnosis, her thoughtfully organized life was thrown into disarray. A native of Ukraine who has lived in the U.S. for more than 30 years, the accountant and travel-enthusiast had a litany of questions like, “Do I have a future?” as she began plotting next steps.
Without hesitation, her primary care physician recommended Dr. Rebecca Yang, medical director of breast surgery, with whom Liliana bonded over their shared fondness for Hawaii. She soon realized that her entire care team was right here at Overlook, a short drive from her Bridgewater home.
“Everyone I met at Overlook – doctors, nurses, technicians, massage therapists, even the greeters – were there to hold my hand from beginning to end.”
Understandably anxious about what would be her first-ever surgery, Liliana was pleased when Dr. James Gardner, a plastic and reconstructive surgeon with more than 25 years of experience, joined her team. His light-hearted humor and confidence made her smile, while Dr. Yang answered her multitude of questions and discussed future travel plans. Both physicians even shared their personal cell numbers with Liliana, assuring her that she could call them any time.
Now four years after her diagnosis, this planner by nature is loving her cancer-free life and recently enjoyed an eight-day cruise in Aruba. While Liliana hopes to never hear the word cancer again, she knows that Overlook is the first place she will turn if she does.
“Cancer may always be in the back of my mind, but if something were to happen again, I have the comfort of knowing that piece of the plan is done. Every day I am thankful I chose Overlook.”
