Meet Monica, a 48-year-old mother of four and dedicated teacher from Linden. In January 2022, Monica’s life took an unexpected turn when she discovered a lump during a routine self-exam. She was diagnosed with breast cancer at The Stacy Goldstein Breast Center at Overlook, beginning a long and challenging journey through surgeries, chemotherapy, and radiation.
Throughout it all, Monica has remained strong: “You have to beat this; you cannot let it beat you,” she says. While the side effects of chemotherapy, including losing her hair twice, have been tough, she finds joy in watching her daughters grow.
The dedicated team at Overlook has been by her side every step of the way. Oncologist Dr. Bonni Guerin has been a constant source of guidance, and surgical oncologist Dr. Faith Goldman brought expertise and positivity to her care. Even small gestures—like surprising Monica with a birthday cake—show the heart of the Overlook team.
Dr. Guerin shared, “Monica, like many of us, had so much on her plate including being the single mom of four! Adding a complicated and life altering disease like breast cancer is truly overwhelming. I am so proud to be part of Monica’s treatment team. Monica required a complex plan and our team at Overlook was perfectly positioned to work together to offer her a true state-of-the-art care plan.”
Dr. Goldman, who performed Monica’s most recent surgery, has played a pivotal role in her care, bringing her positive energy and expertise to each step of the journey. “Fortunately, Monica had a team of dedicated oncology professionals here at Overlook who worked together to define the best treatment plan, navigation, and social services to help her through this journey.”
