Dr. Eben Alexander III, author of #1 The New York Times best-seller “Proof of Heaven,” visited Overlook Medical Center this fall to share his near-death experience which he calls a “journey to the afterlife.”
An academic neurosurgeon for the last 25 years, Dr. Alexander spent 15 of those years at the Brigham & Women’s and the Children’s Hospitals and Harvard Medical School in Boston. Over his academic career, he authored or co-authored some 150 chapters and papers in peer-reviewed journals, and made more than 200 presentations at conferences and medical centers around the world.
Then in late 2008, Dr. Alexander’s life changed dramatically when he lapsed into a coma due to a rare bacterial meningitis-encephalitis of unknown cause. On a ventilator for a week and with doctors weighing the possibility of stopping treatment, he suddenly awakened with memories of a journey beyond this world. He wrote down all he could remember, and now, completely recovered, travels the globe speaking about his experience.
Dr. Alexander shared his story with more than 200 members of the Overlook community who packed the hospital’s Bouras Auditorium and who were able to meet the author as he signed copies of his book in the Caregivers Center at Overlook following the lecture.
This was the fifth in a series of lectures on health and the public interest made possible by a generous gift from the Thomas Glasser Foundation and endowed through the Overlook Foundation.
